Clutter for a Cause 2022

Since 2013, the University of Pittsburgh has encouraged a greener student move-in and move-out process with Clutter for a Cause.

2022 off-campus collections will be July 29 & August 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days at Zulema Parklet (Bates Street & Zulema)!  Learn more. 

Accepted items must be clean and dry:

  • Textiles: Clothing, Accessories, Shoes, Towels, Duvet Covers, Blankets, Curtains, Bedding
  • Kitchen Items: Mini-Fridges (Dry & Free of Food), Microwaves, Rice Cookers, Coffee Pots or Keurigs, Small Kitchenware Items (Plates, Cups, Utensils, etc.)
  • Non-Perishable Food & Hygiene Items: In partnership with the Pitt Police’s Most Wanted Food Drive, we accept all items that are not and expired and that have not yet been opened.
  • Books & Textbooks
  • Dorm & Apartment Essentials: Mirrors, Lamps, Organizational Items (Dry Erase Boards, Plastic Bins, Clothing Organizers, and Laundry Baskets)
  • Electronics: TVs, Computers, Computer Monitors, Printers, Keyboards, Mice, Cables, Phones, and Cameras


Due to health and safety concerns, we are unable to accept the following items: Foam Mattress Toppers, Mattresses, Pillows, Upholstered Furniture (Futons/Couches), Rugs.

All items collected are either resold at the University of Thriftsburgh (on-campus thrift store), Pitt Surplus, or donated to local thrift stores and nonprofit partners.

In Spring 2022, Pitt diverted over 10 tons of materials from the landfill (21,689 pounds!), including:

  • 1,516 pounds – Textiles donated to University of Thriftsburgh thrift store for resale
  • 1,974 pounds – Mini-fridges
  • 2,825 pounds – Nonperishable food & hygiene donated to Pitt Pantry & Community Human Services
  • 7,150 pounds – Dorm essentials (mirrors, lamps, kitchen items, coffee pots, microwaves, etc.)
  • 8,224 pounds – Textile recycling

In April 2019,  Pitt’s on-campus Clutter for a Cause collection gathered 1,200 pounds of household goods and 800 pounds of clothing to be resold at Thriftsburgh AND donated 8,000 pounds of goods to St. Vincent de Paul Society, Goodwill, and the Free Stores in Wilkinsburg and Braddock.
