In the second half of 2019, the University of Pittsburgh piloted glove recycling on campus in 7 locations, including several research laboratories, Dining, and the Student Office of Sustainability. Pilot locations are able to divert all brands of nitrile and latex gloves from the landfill to a to a waste-to-energy facility. Gloves are collected in labeled boxes, which are then sealed and shipped to a waste-to-energy facility in prepaid, pre-labeled boxes.
The University is able to provide this pilot at no cost to users in partnership with Medline (a University contracted supplier).
Glove recycling is just a small part of Pitt’s sustainability efforts, if you are interested in learning more about Pitt’s Green Laboratory Program click here.
If you are interested in being added to the next round of pilot locations, please email Kristin Olexa (Purchasing).
