Race to Zero Waste
The University of Pittsburgh’s Campus Zero Waste celebrates zero waste living and programming to help our community Face, Trace, Replace, Erase, and Embrace our waste!
For 12 years, Pitt community members have participated in RecycleMania, a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for colleges and universities to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over an 8-week period, schools report recycling, composting, and landfill data. Schools are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. 2020 marked the University of Pittsburgh’s 12th year of participation in this competition.
In response to COVID-19, the 2021 Zero Waste Week became a virtual event in celebration of Zero Waste. Through a series of events, competitions, guest speakers, makers workshops, and giveaways, the Pitt community celebrated zero waste virtually.
