Hispanic Heritage Month 2021

Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15-October 15th!

Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates of the influences, history, and achievements of Hispanic culture and people in and on the U.S.!   To celebrate, we are highlighting the people in our Pitt community contributing to sustainability on campus!

Lisia De Lima Spellman

Lisia de Lima Spellman is the Sustainability Manager at Pitt Eats by Compass, where she focuses on creating strategies to develop a sustainable food system for Pitt Eats. These strategies include introducing pre-consumer composting, managing the Choose 2 Reuse Program, supporting campus food recovery initiatives, and leading the effort to introduce more fair-trade products to campus.

Lisia is from Brazil, where she received her B.S. in Animal Science from the Federal University of Technology – Paraná.

Grace Carreño-Florez

Grace is a third-year Ph.D. student at Pitt in the Microbiology and Immunology pram, and is the current sustainability coordinator for Latin American Graduate Organization of Students (LAGOS).  She believes in the necessity of living in harmony with the environment. In that sense, she is contributing to finding academic and social spaces where LAGOS could bring awareness of the importance of sustainable actions in the Pitt community. Besides studying and leading sustainability projects with LAGOS, she enjoys every single detail that makes her feel alive: nature, friendship, family, and cry or laugh with a good movie!

Juliana Monteiro Bernardino

Juliana is a GSPIA alumna and was the Sustainability Coordinator with the Latin American Graduate Organization of Students (LAGOS) in 2020-2021. Juliana promoted events to link sustainable environment practices with indigenous rights in Latin America. She also enhanced sustainable consumption by ensuring LAGOS caterings were supplied by the local Latinex community.

Juliana is from Brazil and has graduated with a master in International Development. She currently works with the UNDP to develop strategies to achieve gender equality globally.
