In 2014, the University of Pittsburgh was a Founding Property Partner of the Pittsburgh 2030 District’s Oakland boundary – and 2030 goals permeate the Pitt Sustainability Plan.
In line with the international 2030 Challenge, Pitt is actively working to reduce water usage for existing facilities 50% by 2030 (below 2008 regional baseline). Every major capital project starts with these targets.
To continue to reduce water use, Pitt is continuing advance water conservation and efficiency strategies at the product, system, building, and campus scales. These strategies are also built into the University’s Design Guidelines, which are implemented on all planning, design, engineering, and construction projects. For fiscal year 2025, Pitt was 11.7% below the 2008 regional baseline.
