Marshall Plan for Middle America Awarded Second Place in International Climate Challenge Cup

The City of Pittsburgh won second place in the international Climate Challenge Cup for the Marshall Plan for Middle America.

The City of Pittsburgh has won second place in an international competition called the Climate Challenge Cup as part of COP26. The award was presented to Mayor William Peduto and the City’s Chief Resilience Officer Grant Ervin in the “Achieving Net Zero” category for the Marshall Plan for Middle America.

The Marshall Plan for Middle America Roadmap aims to build a regional, multi-sectoral coalition of stakeholders to drive investment in infrastructure and energy diversification that will catalyze more equitable economic recovery while laying a foundation for the Ohio Valley (including Upper Appalachia) to be a global leader in cleaner energy resources and circular economy practices. The MP4MA Roadmap was crafted by the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Sustainable Business with inputs from academic researchers, Mayor William Peduto and the City of Pittsburgh, the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network USA, Steel Valley Authority, and Heartland Capital Strategies Network, including funding and scientific expertise from the Enel Foundation.

The Climate Challenge Cup is a new international competition showcasing transformative civic research partnerships between research bodies, civic organizations, and local communities to combat climate change. It brings together knowledge and experience from across the United Kingdom and the United States to create a network of innovators helping affected communities adapt to climate change or achieve net-zero.

There were 12 project finalists from around the United Kingdom and the United States in two categories. The City of Pittsburgh was the only organization to be a finalist in both categories.
