Plant2Plate Student Gardens

Plant2Plate Student Gardens are on-campus, student-run produce gardens.

A student organization, Plant2Plate’s mission is to actively connect the Pitt community to their food through hands-on agricultural learning. Members participate in upholding this mission through the upkeep of local urban and edible gardens to provide fresh produce to the Pitt community and beyond.

Starting from a 2009 concept from when students in the GEOL 1333: Sustainability course identified a University-owned green space as an opportunity for urban agriculture, Plant2Plate grew out of a student vision for a 11,600 square foot produce garden on Oakland Avenue.

Since 2010, student Plant2Plate volunteers have produced hundreds of pounds of produce, distributed to the community via the Pitt Pantry and the Oakland Food Pantry. Over the years, the Plant2Plate added its Darragh Street Berry Garden (managed by Plant2Plate in partnership with Pitt Grounds).  It is also planning a transition from Oakland Avenue to 5 Vera Street.

In November 2021, the University hired its first Plant2Plate Garden Intern, tasked with helping the garden transition to new spaces on campus.
