Samantha Chan

 

Samantha Chan is the Assistant Director of Sustainability for the Office of Sustainability at the University of Pittsburgh. She works with the University-wide Pitt Sustainability team, providing support for the Pitt Sustainability Plan’s goals and strategy. Sam and her colleagues help advance the University towards achieving all 68 sustainability goals, with the recent 2018-22 Progress Report on the Pitt Sustainability Plan providing an in-depth summary of their work. Sam leads efforts to embed sustainability into the culture of the University with a special focus on the Pitt Green suite of programs, employee education, communications, and strategic partnerships. She sets programming priorities that empower positive behavior change and weave sustainability into the fabric of campus culture. She helps advance sustainability projects and build collaborations, strategically advancing sustainability initiatives and communicating Pitt’s leadership and innovation across the spectrum of sustainability. Sam is passionate about furthering Pitt Sustainability’s vision of balancing equity, environment and economics so current and future generations can thrive.

Sam’s professional and educational experience includes environmental analytics, wildlife conservation, revitalization efforts, and biophilic resiliency initiatives that benefit both people and the planet.  Prior to joining the Office of Sustainability Samantha worked with the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing & Innovation at the University of Tennessee performing embodied energy calculations on recycling techniques for fiber composite epoxy laminate to further the circular economy for airplanes and wind turbines.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Psychology from Allegheny College and a Master’s of Sustainability from Chatham University.
