Dr. Markus Chmielus is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, which he joined in September 2013. He holds a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the Technical University of Berlin and the Helmholtz Center for Materials and Energy in Germany, completed a postdoc at Cornell University (2010–13), and earned M.S. degrees in Aerospace Engineering (University of Stuttgart, Germany) and Materials Science and Engineering (Boise State University).
Dr. Chmielus' research examines how production and processing parameters affect the properties and microstructure of metals, focusing on three areas: first, additive manufacturing (also known as 3D printing), including Alloy 625, Alloy 718 and Ti-64; second, the deposition of ultra-high-purity thin films; and third, the basic research, manufacturing and application of smart materials such as Ni-Mn-Ga magnetic shape-memory alloys and magnetocaloric materials. Unifying these areas is the quantitative characterization of microstructure, defects, and mechanical, electrical, magnetic and thermal properties across different length scales, using local, national and international facilities including synchrotron and neutron diffraction.
