Ruskin Hall’s solar panels are now fully operational!
The 240 rooftop photovoltaic panels on Ruskin Hall are providing about 15% of the building’s electricity, covering all common areas (lounge, laundry room, fitness center, & hallways) – and already produced 16,150 kWh this year.
The first on a Pitt residence hall, this new 136.8 kW solar array joins the one on Petersen Sports Complex that became operational in 2024. Additional rooftop solar installations are ongoing at Posvar and David Lawrence Halls.
Pitt’s solar efforts are a key part of the University’s goal to produce or procure 50% renewable electricity by 2030 and 100% by 2037. These projects also help reduce electricity transmission losses by using solar power directly at the buildings where it is produced. Pitt continues to purchase power from the Vesper Gaucho solar site, which supplies about 18% of campus-wide electricity annually.
