Energy Use

In 2014, the University of Pittsburgh was a Founding Property Partner of the Pittsburgh 2030 District’s Oakland boundary – and 2030 goals permeate the Pitt Sustainability Plan.

In line with the international 2030 Challenge, Pitt is actively working to reduce energy use intensity (EUI) for existing facilities 50% by 2030 (below national 2003 baselines). For new construction, the goal is an 80% reduction in site energy usage by 2030 in support of campus wide carbon neutrality by 2037; every major capital project starts with these EUI targets.

To continue to reduce energy use, Pitt is continuing advance energy conservation and efficiency strategies at the product, system, building and campus scales. These strategies are also built into the University’s Design Guidelines, which are implemented on all planning, design, engineering, and construction projects. For fiscal year 2025, Pitt was 22.8% below the 2003 national median baseline.
