The University of Pittsburgh has been a Food Recovery Verified campus since 2017, when we became the first campus in the ACC to earn the designation. Food Recovery Network (FRN) recognizes food businesses and events that donate surplus food to hunger-fighting nonprofit organizations, and FRV serves as a third-party verification of that commitment.
At Pitt, food recovery is a community effort. Our student-led Food Recovery Heroes organization plays a central role in collecting and redistributing surplus food on campus. Pitt has also launched food security lockers to expand access to food for students in need, an initiative that earned national recognition in 2024 for its innovative approach to addressing food insecurity and reducing waste.
