Single Stream Recycling

The University of Pittsburgh is striving to reduce landfill waste 25% by 2030 (from 2017 levels). Learn more about Pitt’s materials diversion and recycling rates.

Single stream recycling locations accept multiple type of recyclable materials in one receptacle, leaving separation to be done at the recycling facility. Pitt single stream recycling locations accept paper, metal, plastic, and glass.

Accepted Materials

  • Paper – Flattened cardboard, office & glossy paper, magazines, newspapers, paperboard, mail, and books
  • Metal – Aluminum, tin, and steel containers, plus aluminum foil
  • Plastics – Bottles, jugs, jars, and containers
  • Glass – Bottles, jugs, jars, and containers

Materials must be empty, clean, & dry when placed in the recycling bin!

NOT Recyclable

  • Disposable hot coffee cups (cardboard sleeve can be recycled separately)
  • Plastic bags or film (Accepted at many local grocery stores)
  • Cartons (paper or plastic; common for soup & juice)
  • Clam shell containers
  • Small lids
  • Straws
  • Styrofoam  (Pittsburgh Region drop-off locations)

Recycling containers are distributed throughout every University of Pittsburgh building and across campus for your convenience. However, if you know of a spot that could use a collection container (or if you need a container for your work area), please do the following:

  • If your academic building does not have recycling bins, please contact your Facility Manager.
  • If your residence hall, dorm room, or Pitt-owned apartment does not have adequate recycling, please contact Panther Central.
  • If you are in a building the University leases, please email zerowaste@pitt.edu
