Dr. Eric Beckman, Distinguished Service Professor in the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering and Co-Director of the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation, was named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors 2020 cohort.

Pitt Signs “All In” National Declaration on Climate Action & Clean Recovery
America is Still In: Pitt joined over 1,500 leaders supporting national mobilization on climate and clean recovery.
Pitt recently joined more than 1,500 signatories (including 123 universities) in signing the “America is Still In” declaration on climate action, released on December 12, 2020, to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement.
In doing so, Pitt reaffirmed its own commitment to carbon reduction (including carbon neutrality by 2037) and voiced its support for a renewed national commitment for climate action.

In Fiscal Year 2020, Pitt’s reached its lowest total energy use per square foot since data tracking began in 2008, keeping it on track to reach its goal to reduce energy intensity by 50% by 2030.

Pitt Shuttles Switch to Propane, Reducing Carbon Emissions
Starting in July 2020, Pitt’s new shuttles are a state-of-the-art fleet of 20 propane-powered shuttle buses, which help us reach towards carbon reduction goals and improve local air quality.
Starting July 1, 2020, Pitt’s new shuttles are a state-of-the-art fleet of 20 propane-powered shuttle buses! Along with new amenities like passenger-counting technology and WiFi, the shuttles will contribute to a 33% reduction in carbon emissions from Pitt’s shuttle operations (previously a mix of gasoline and 5% biodiesel vehicles).

Pitt on Top 30 Green Powered Universities List (July 2020)
The University of Pittsburgh once again joined the Top 30 Colleges and Universities list as one of the largest green power users. As of July 2020, Pitt was #30 on the largest green power universities list.
The list reflects the Top 30 higher education institutions within the EPA’s Green Power Partnership who purchase and/or generate large volumes of renewable electricity. Pitt became a U.S. EPA Green Power Partner for the first time in 2019, made the Top 30 list in July 2019, and provides annual updates on its electricity and renewable consumption to EPA.
