2018-22 Progress Report on the Pitt Sustainability Plan

The University of Pittsburgh’s sustainability journey dates back to 1990, with commitments, activities, and engagement deepening and increasing over the past three decades.  In 2018, the Pitt Sustainability Plan set the University’s sustainability goals and strategies, further cementing sustainability as a core value for Pitt.

Clutter For A Cause 2023: Zero Waste

The University of Pittsburgh supports and efficient, zero waste student move-out process with Clutter for a Cause.

2022 Pitt Commuter Survey Results

In Fall 2022, we asked all Pitt students, faculty, and staff to participate in the University’s 2022 Commuter Survey. The results (contextualized with prior commuter survey responses below) provide valuable insight into Pitt community members’ commuting choices. Moving forward, results are helping inform and guide the University’s transportation and mobility strategies, programs, and infrastructure investment planning.

The Pitt Green Office designation has been revamped for 2023!

The Pitt Green Office designation encourages Pitt employees to makes sustainable choices in their daily work by recognizing habits that conserve resources and promote a culture of sustainability.

Bigelow Boulevard Ranked One of 2023’s Best New Bike Lanes in U.S.

Bigelow Boulevard, which was transformed through a Pitt infrastructure project, was the No. 3 best new bike lane in America, according to a People for Bikes ranking.

The bike advocacy nonprofit described the upgrades as an “example of how institutions can invest in surrounding communities — to the benefit of both.”

Pitt’s First LEED Platinum Certification Achieved for Salk Hall Renovation

Home to the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Pharmacy and the School of Dental Medicine, Salk Hall is famously where Jonas Salk carried out his research on the polio vaccine while at Pitt.

A recent $72 million renovation of the 82-year-old building brought a multitude of upgrades and improvements. As a result, Salk Hall now boasts newly updated labs, modern classrooms and optimized office spaces, which helped earn the renovation a prestigious LEED Platinum certification, the highest recognition in sustainable building.

Safe Chemical Waste Management and Increasing Recycling Efforts

The University of Pittsburgh’s Pitt Sustainability Plan has a focus on responsible materials and waste handling and Pitt’s Department of Environmental Health & Safety is a big part of that work, working to minimize the impact of proper chemical waste disposal on the environment.

MCSI 2023 Undergraduate Summer Research Opportunities

The Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation is looking for Pitt undergraduate students to do research in sustainability for Summer 2023! If you are interested in going beyond the classroom curriculum, developing your own ideas, and working independently on hands-on research all while getting paid…this program is for you!

This includes reaching carbon neutrality by 2037. To support this goal and further carbon neutrality solutions, the University is excited to announce the Pitt Sustainability Challenge.
