Pitt Sustainability Challenge Announced: Calling Creative & Innovative Thinkers

The University of Pittsburgh has active sustainability efforts and initiatives across disciplines, domains, and scales — as detailed in the Pitt Sustainability Plan and Pitt Climate Action Plan. This includes reaching carbon neutrality by 2037. To support this goal and further carbon neutrality solutions, the University is excited to announce the Pitt Sustainability Challenge.

Pitt Nursing joins National Nursing Climate Challenge to Fight Climate Change

Launched in 2018, the Nurses Climate Challenge added a “School Commitment” component in 2020 to empower nurses to educate their colleagues and community about the impacts of climate change on human health. In November 2022, the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Nursing joins 60 colleges and universities across the United States who are already taking part in the initiative.

Food Recovery Verified Campus

The University of Pittsburgh has been a third-party verified Food Recovery Verified Campus since 2017 -- when we were the first campus in the ACC to become so.

Pitt’s Hillside Area Development Recognized with National SCUP Award

The University of Pittsburgh’s Hillside Framework Plan was recognized by the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) with an honorable mention for “Excellence in Planning for a District or Campus Component.”

Conceived by Pitt in partnership with David Rubin of Land Collective, the design creates a cohesive environment that will unify the upper and lower sections of the University’s Pittsburgh campus by utilizing land often overlooked as impractical.

The University of Pittsburgh’s two main dining halls (The Eatery and The Perch at Sutherland) renewed their Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurants Gold designations in 2021. Both the Cathedral Cafe and Schenley Cafe earned Silver Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant designations for the first time in 2021!

Tree Campus Certification Received for Pittsburgh Campus

In recognition of the University of Pittsburgh’s outstanding commitment to protecting and enhancing the local tree canopy, the Arbor Day Foundation has certified the University’s Pittsburgh campus as a 2021 Tree Campus for the first time!

This certification program nationally honors universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and employees in the spirit of conversation. To obtain this distinction, Pitt met the 5 core standards for sustainable campus forestry required by Tree Campus Higher Education:
