AASHE STARS Gold

The University of Pittsburgh is very proud to have achieved AASHE STARS Gold ratings in 2021 and 2024. The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education’s Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (AASHE STARS) is a transparent framework for colleges and universities to measure and benchmark their sustainability performance across all aspects of higher education.

Bicycle Friendly University (Silver)

The University of Pittsburgh achieved Silver Bike Friendly University designation in 2021, building on our 2018 Bike Friendly University Bronze designation.

Our Pitt Sustainability Plan goal is Gold Bike Friendly University by 2025.

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford has been awarded a $230,000 grant from the Met-Ed/Penelec Sustainable Energy Fund toward the green building and renewable attributes of the in construction Engineering & Technology Building.

The grant will fund a rooftop solar array on a new academic building is pursuing LEED certification and will house Pitt Bradford’s new engineering technology programs on campus, including energy engineering technology.

Marshall Plan for Middle America Awarded Second Place in International Climate Challenge Cup

The City of Pittsburgh won second place in the international Climate Challenge Cup for the Marshall Plan for Middle America.


The City of Pittsburgh has won second place in an international competition called the Climate Challenge Cup as part of COP26. The award was presented to Mayor William Peduto and the City’s Chief Resilience Officer Grant Ervin in the “Achieving Net Zero” category for the Marshall Plan for Middle America.

New Recreation and Wellness Center Will Champion Students’ Mental and Physical Wellness

New Campus Rec & Wellness Center will be a total health & wellness destination providing new campus connections & showcasing Pitt’s commitment to sustainability.

In design since 2018, the new Campus Recreation and Wellness Center is expected to open in Fall 2024 and provide 270,000 square feet of first-rate amenities and services driven and conceptualized by the primary stakeholders — students.

Covestro and University of Pittsburgh Establish Groundbreaking Circular Economy Program

New Covestro Circular Economy Program includes research & first U.S. graduate program on circular economy design solutions for global waste.

The rise of circular economy principles – where materials are kept in continuous use by design – across industries has led to a new collaboration between Covestro LLC and the University of Pittsburgh. Pitt’s Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation (MCSI) and Swanson School of Engineering will house the new Covestro Circular Economy Program at the University of Pittsburgh.
