Pitt Joins U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Climate Challenge

The University of Pittsburgh recently joined the over 175 partners pursuing bold, measurable action against climate change and taking part in the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Better Climate Challenge.

In doing so, Pitt reaffirmed its own commitment to carbon neutrality by 2037 and support for broader national climate action.

Pitt GHG Inventory for Fiscal Year 2022

Reflecting the University of Pittsburgh’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality for the Pittsburgh campus by 2037 the results of Pitt’s Fiscal Year 2022 (FY22) Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory for the Pittsburgh campus are summarized below, showcasing Pitt’s progress on GHG reductions and commitment to annual GHG inventories.

Pitt Nitrogen Inventory for FY22

Learn about Pitt’s annual Nitrogen Inventory, a complement to the annual greenhouse gas inventory.

The University of Pittsburgh’s nitrogen footprint analysis was completed as part of the University’s annual greenhouse gas inventorying process. For fiscal year 2022, Pitt’s net nitrogen footprint totaled 129.95 metric tons, a 30% decrease from FY19 (the first year the Nitrogen inventory was performed). However, this footprint is up 28.5% over FY21, primarily due to the food and wastewater categories.

2022-23 Research Annual Report, Sustainability Section

The University of Pittsburgh’s 2022-23 Annual Report of Research was recently published by the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Research. The University of Pittsburgh is currently ranked third in National Institute of Health (NIH) funding cementing us as one of the premier research institutions in the country.

Pittsburgh’s Water Quality Tributaries Analysis

In the year 2021, the Water Collaboratory and 3 Rivers Waterkeeper secured funding through the University of Pittsburgh’s Year of Engagement Program. Their mission: to gather 100 samples from the tributaries that nourish the Ohio, Monongahela, and Allegheny Rivers. Over the course of four quarters, from August 2021 to May 2022, these dedicated teams meticulously collected samples from 25 distinct locations. The findings that emerged were eye-opening, revealing heightened levels of both nutrients and metals coursing through our river systems.

Pitt & Vesper Energy Cut Ribbon on New Gaucho Solar Project near Pittsburgh International Airport

On August 16, 2023, the University of Pittsburgh and Vesper Energy officially cut the ribbon on the Gaucho Solar project. Built on 68 acres on the border of Findlay Township (Allegheny County) and Independence Township (Beaver County), it the largest solar project in Southwestern Pennsylvania to-date — and one of the largest solar projects in Western Pennsylvania, with about 55,000 solar panels generating electricity. The 20-megawatt solar farm sits near Pittsburgh International Airport.

Rooftop Solar Installed On Pitt Bradford Campus

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford is celebrating the installation of a 108kW rooftop solar array on the state-of-the-art George B. Duke Engineering and Information Technologies Building on the Pitt-Bradford campus in Bradford, Pennsylvania. Now operational, it is expected to produce 116,500 kWh of electricity each year, offsetting approximately 40% of the building’s total electricity use.
